SCOTUS Victory and What it Means for Catholics
So if you have a cellphone, television, radio or social media account - you've probably heard the big news today. Justice Kennedy is resigning from the Supreme Court. Why is this big news?
You might want to sit down for this one.
This one instance, could mean not only a conservative change for generations to come - but the END of Roe v Wade. For those who might not be familiar, Roe v Wade was a decision made in 1973 by the United States Supreme court on the issue of the constitutionality of laws that criminalized or restricted access to abortions. They ruled in favor of abortion, and because of that - millions, upon millions, upon millions of innocent babies were slaughtered in the womb.
You might've been told in 2016, that your vote mattered. It always matters, but 2016 was a crucial year. We had such a stark contrast in party, that some found it impossible to vote, while others like myself knew exactly what we were going to do. There were several reasons for my vote, and I can narrow it down to the top three.
1) I just loved Trump
2) Immigration
3) SCOTUS
Why SCOTUS? Because I could see exactly where we were heading. Anthony Scalia had died - and that left a vacant seat on the SC. What would happen if Hillary Clinton won? She would most definitely appoint a liberal judge. Let's look at the others... Ruth Bader Ginsburg is 85, 3 others in their late 70's. There was a good chance one might retire, or die. Leaving more vacant seats to fill.
Then what?
We'd end up with a liberal majority, and generations to come would be shaped by the morals of abortion and LGBTQ issues.
What does this mean now? We saw Trump appoint a replacement for Scalia, in the conservative SCJ Neil Gorsuch. Now we see a resignation from Justice Kennedy.
Replacing Kennedy with a conservative judge who has pro-life values, will ensure a majority vote on the overturning of Roe v Wade. Which means states can decide whether or not to ban abortion. This can be done both for the states, AND federally. Which ultimately means most, to ALL abortions could be banned. This isn't a small victory, this is a HUGE day for conservatives and Catholics. What's important is November 2018. We hope to have the new confirmed justice in before the midterm election, but to consistently assure a conservative and Christian country - get out and vote.
This should prove more than ever - that your vote COUNTS. With one vote, we have potentially saved millions of future babies from the horror of abortion.
Signed,
The Girl in the Mantilla
